Service Light On? Your Car May Not Need a Full Service

When the service light appears on your dashboard, it is easy to assume that your vehicle immediately needs a full service.

But that is not always the case.

A service reminder tells you that your vehicle needs attention. What that attention involves should depend on several factors, including the vehicle’s mileage, age, previous service history and overall condition.

At Landy Shack, we believe servicing should be based on what your vehicle actually needs, rather than replacing parts simply because a warning or service light has appeared.

What Does a Service Light Actually Mean?

In many vehicles, the service light is programmed to appear after a certain amount of time or mileage.

It is an important reminder, but it does not automatically tell you exactly which parts need replacing.

For example, a vehicle that has travelled relatively few kilometres since its previous service may require something very different from a vehicle that has covered a significant distance.

That is why an inspection is important before deciding what work needs to be done.

Your Vehicle Should Be Assessed First

A recent vehicle we inspected had travelled very few kilometres.

Rather than automatically carrying out a full service and replacing components unnecessarily, we assessed the vehicle first.

Based on its condition and mileage, the vehicle received:

  • An oil change

  • Filter checks

  • A general safety inspection

During the inspection, however, we identified something that did need attention: the rear brake pads.

The brake pads were addressed before the vehicle went back onto the road.

This is exactly why servicing should involve more than simply resetting a warning light.

A Service Is Also an Opportunity to Find Problems Early

Routine maintenance gives a workshop the opportunity to inspect areas of the vehicle that you may not notice during everyday driving.

Depending on the vehicle, an inspection may include checking:

  • Brake pads and discs

  • Oil and fluid levels

  • Filters

  • Tyres

  • Suspension components

  • Steering

  • Cooling systems

  • Visible leaks

  • Warning lights and diagnostic faults

Finding wear early can help prevent a relatively small maintenance issue from becoming a more expensive repair later.

Brake pads are a good example.

Replacing worn pads at the right time can help protect the braking system and, most importantly, ensure the vehicle remains safe to drive.

Full Service vs Vehicle-Specific Servicing

Not every visit to a workshop should result in the same list of replacement parts.

A better approach is to look at the vehicle individually.

Your servicing requirements can depend on:

Mileage: How far has the vehicle travelled since its last service?

Time: Even vehicles that are driven infrequently still require maintenance because fluids and components can deteriorate over time.

Service history: What was replaced or inspected during the previous service?

Vehicle condition: Are there signs of wear, leaks or other developing problems?

Manufacturer requirements: What maintenance is recommended for the vehicle at its current age and mileage?

Looking at these factors helps determine what should be serviced now, what should be monitored and what does not yet need replacing.

Avoid Paying for Work Your Vehicle Does Not Need

Good vehicle maintenance is not about doing the most work possible.

It is about doing the right work at the right time.

An experienced workshop should be able to explain what has been inspected, what needs attention and why it is being recommended.

It should also be clear when something does not need replacing yet.

That approach helps you maintain your vehicle properly while avoiding unnecessary repairs and replacement costs.

Is Your Service Light On?

If your service light has appeared, do not ignore it — but do not assume that it automatically means you need a complete service either.

Have the vehicle properly assessed so that its mileage, condition and maintenance history can determine what needs to be done.

At Landy Shack, we provide servicing, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs, with specialist expertise in Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles.

Our approach is simple: assess the vehicle first and recommend the work it actually needs.
